I certainly understand that Ian. I strongly believe that this has nothing to do with AVG. I guess that the Windows search option would have got disabled in the settings. Please follow the below mentioned instructions to enable it:
1) Click Start and select Control Panell
2) Select Programs and under Programs and Features option select "Turn Windows features on or off"
3) You will get a small window opened up with many options with check boxes.
4) Please scroll down completely to the bottom and you can find "Windows Search" under "Windows Process Activation Service"
5) If the Windows Search check box is unticked please tick the check box and click ok.
Check whether do you get search option after following these instructions. Thank you.

Yes I have installed both of these programs. Should I now uninstall them?
This does not answer my queries.
How do I restore the search facility on Windows 7?
How do I make my ArchiCAD program a priority program?
- Having installed AVG I can no longer use the Windows search facility. This facility is essential for finding missing files. How do I restore this facility?
2. AVG is showing that one of my most used software programs has a reduced priority. How do I restore full priority?
I have followed the actions above and found that the Windows search check box is ticked.
I then re-tried to make a search but again without any success but this time I briefly got an AVG dialogue box stating that search has a reduced function but it did not stay on long enough for me to read all of it.
I also get a box stating that my ArchiCAD program has a reduced priority. I am an architect and use this program as my main drawing program.
This has only happened since I installed AVG annd I urgently reqire a solution.
