Let’s get things back on track for you. Your AVG Internet Security (1 computer) is valid till 2/20/2019. You need to uninstall this expired version and reinstall it to fix the issue completely.
Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Uninstall -> remove Antivirus free and restart your device. Refer this article: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Internet-Security-or-Premium-Security to install AVG Internet Security.
Once the installation gets completed, Open Internet Security -> My AVG -> My Subscription -> enter your license number to activate paid version. Hope, it helps.

I received my email with the download and license number for the new year over a month ago. The invoice showing the charge of 69.99 was also there. I followed the instructions same as I have done for the couple years and thought I was good to go. Then a short time ago a message came up on my computer that my version had expired and I was no longer protected. I have been trying to figure this out for some time, plus we have very poor internet service so during some times of the day I can't do downloads etc. I would like to know how to fix this and if there was a problem with the payment I need to fix this. Apparently all that I downloaded was the Free version and I want the full version as per my subscription. My regular email is anniecyr54@gmail.com

Yes, we do not have license number for AVG Internet Security - Unlimited (1 year subscription) as it is activated using your email address. But we have another product "AVG Internet Security for 1 computer" which is activated using license number.
Annie will activate the product using his/her license number but we request you to log in using your email address. Open Internet Security -> My AVG -> My Subscription -> log out/ remove license and then log back in.
Are you kidding me? This is what I did to fix the LAST problem… And if you could point me to my license number that would be awesome… since I can't find it ANYWHERE…
