It could be possible that you have put the MS Office applications to sleep using AVG TuneUp during the maintenance tasks.
I'd request you to check it and wake them to resolve the issue.

Open AVG TuneUp, click Speed Up -> Background programs and applications. Scroll down to see the list of apps that were put to sleep. If MS Office app is sleeping, click Wake against it and check if you can access the documents.

Over the weekend I signed up for the 60 free trial Ultimate Tune Up.  After I installed it, I can no longer access my documents and spreadsheets in my Windows 7.  I know this version is no longer supported by Microsoft but that didn't worry me because I only use them for in home word processing.  I'm retired and on a fixed income and don't have the money to invest in fancy programs on my computer.  How can I access my documents?  If this is going to be impossible, I will cancel the up grade.
