My thanks to both Gulam and Alan for their prompt replies. I started investigating their suggestions. But in a fortunate coincidence, before I had spotted a likely solution, AVG Anti-virus free did an automatic update. And it worked. I then ran a manual update, and that also worked. I then waited a few hours, and have just run another manual update, and that also worked. So it seems that the problem has resolved itself. Which is a big relief. Thanks again.

I’ve been running the free version of AVG anti-virus for years. Today, for the first time, when trying to run my daily update, I got the error messages:
There are no active components
An error occurred when saving the configuration:
Connection is off-line.
Go on-line to learn more about this issue.
The connection is NOT off-line. And when I go on-line, I just get this message:
Additional information is not available for this message.
So what do I do now to fix this?
