Account problems

I have a one year AVG internet security contract which has been activated,  but am often advised that there are security issues for which I should enter into a new agreement with yet more expense.
Is this a common feature with AVG that only part packages are sold.   Has anyone else had this problem?  or have I failed to see the obvious?
