Let's have a look at it together. Are you trying to register your code under this link: https://www.avg.com/en-us/code ? Could you provide us the screenshot http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Create-screenshot of the error message you received to check and assist you further?

I purchased AVG Ultimate when I enter the activation code provided on the card it will not activate. it just keeps telling me to enter a valid code.

Rusty, For your info, just in case that you are unaware, you can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Please remove the screenshot which have AVG Ultimate activation code. It is not recommended to share those information in Social forums, else other's have opportunity to activate this code. 

Please try to register your code using different browser and use the following link: https://www.avg.com/en-us/code . Hope, it helps.
