Application updates - checking goes on endlessly

AVG tells me 'Your AGV is out of date'. So I click on Update Now.  It tells me that Virus Definitions are up to date.  If I 'check for application updates' it starts checking but it goes on for hours until it times out …
What more can I do? I've 'selected Automatic Updates anyway. So why is 'my AVG out of date'? 
(My subscription has just been renewed)

Please repair your AVG program as mentioned here, restart your PC and check the status with the update.
If the issue persists, let us know the version of AVG installed on your PC (Open AVG > Menu > About).

I have made screenprints of the relevant messages to show what is going on. Can I attach a Word document?  I get
Virus definitions are up to date
Your application is not up to date
Attachment will also show you the version under About:
