Applications 'put to sleep' by AVG no longer respond to 'Wake Up' call!

AVG suggested putting to sleep little used applications to speed up system. Agreed to put WORD & EXCEL to sleep.  AVG assured that when needed these applications would be 'Woken Up'. This has worked OK until 2 weeks ago when these applications failed to start when needed. The AVG Wake Up notice that normally appears at bottom of screen only flashed up for a split second. Is there a solution to this problem out there?
