Are AVG and AVAST the same?

I'm looking for antivirus software to install on Windows 10 Pro. After some reasearch it has come down to two choices. According to this comparison of AVG vs Avast, they say that the two are practically the same. When checking the websites of both companies even some design features seem familiar. Are they under the same corporation and basically the same and there really isn't too much of a difference between these two?

Yes, AVG is owned by AVAST. You may experience similar User interface for these programs but they are completely different ventures.
