I actually have had remote assistance help from AVG since posting, and the problem seems to have gone. (The reference for that, if you wish to look this up, was Request #01671835)
Two recently installed files were deleted, one was called "adegear" or something similar, I forget what the other one was.
The problem seems to have disappeared..
