Recently exe files won't run so I ran AVG Free and it stops at 99% I can't install again or use another AV as exe files won't run.
I looked at all the RegEdit fixes for the exe issues - same problem.
If I have a virus, AVG stops at 99% whilts in Advanced Threat Scan so doesn't find it.
A real online AV scan would be ideal that doesn't invlove an exe file.

Initially, we'd like to clarify that if your computer is infected, then the AVG scan would run & display the result.
From your description, it seems that few services are unable to initiate, which blocks the scan to progress/complete.
In this regard, you can try repairing AVG program once & then try running the scan.
Alternately, you can run a boot time scan using AVG Free Antivirus to check if it helps.
