By the time I saw your reply, I uninsalled AVG and reinstalled and everything is OK.  Thank you for your response - I'm not sure if it would have worked or not.

AVG updated today.  The email scanning function is no longer working.  What do I need to do?  I have an HP laptop running Win 8.1 - it's a 64 bit system.  First time I've had this problem.
