AVG 2015 Hanging access to shared folders in W7 p2p network

Thank you Borislav,

I can confirm that as per my fault report, AVG was installed correctly. First I tried installing it as an upgrade to AVG2014. Then I uninstalled it completely using the “Programs and Features” uninstall and then running AVG uninstaller utility to clean-up. I then did a full clean install of AVG 2015.

I then created a completely separate virtual system on Oracle Virtual Box with 2 new newly installed Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 virtual PCs and installed AVG 2015 clean on those.

The problem was present/reproducible in all the above scenarios.

I can further confirm that the AVG File and Printer sharing was enabled. Access to the files on the network share was not blocked completely as it would be if File and Printer sharing was disabled. It was just unusable slow.

Finally, I can re-confirm that if I uninstalled AVG2015 and reinstalled AVG2014, it worked normally in both the live and virtual systems. The issue can be reproduced in any W7 peer network.

Kind regards

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I reported the behaviour to AVG some weeks ago but can get no response whatever.

The scenario is as follows:-

  • 5 identical brand new Dell PCs with Windows 7 Professional. They were all set up identically from new and have only ever had AVG installed (no other malware products)
  • 1 further older PC with Windows 7 Professional of a different make which is used as a shared file store.
  • The PCs are all connected together as a peer-to-peer network using MS file sharing.
  • All PCs currently have AVG 2014 Internet Security installed and working perfectly OK.
  • The server PC has a number of shared folders which users use to store company data files.
  • If we upgrade the PCs to AVG 2015 Internet Security 2015, the PCs work fine but when accessing files in shared folders client to server or client to client, the speed of access to these files is either so slow that the PC is unusable or the PC hangs completely.
  • This occurs whether we install AVG2015 over the top of AVG2014 or remove AVG2014 first (with the remover) and do a clean install.
  • If we temporarily disable the Firewall, the speed is still much slower but not by as much.
  • If we temporarily disable AVG fully via the advanced settings menu, full transfer speed is restored.
To eliminate any specific issues with this network or the PCs, I have reproduced the issue off-site as follows:-

  • Set up 2 clean install Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 virtual PCs in Oracle Virtual Box and with a virtual network connecting them. Copy the clean install virtual disks so as to be able to reset to clean install later.
  • Set up shared folders on both and measure speed of transfer of large files between PCs. Speed is normal.
  • Install AVG 2014 IS on both PCs. Measure transfer speed again. Speed still normal – no measurable difference.
  • Start again with previously saved virtual disk but this time install AVG 2015 IS.
  • Measure transfer speed again. Speed as now reduced by factor of 10 as on client’s system.
This bug has made our system unusable so we had to revert to AVG 2014 to get round it. It is really easy to reproduce 100% on any W7 peer network. I have not been able to test W8 systems to date so I cannot say for certain if it affects them too.
