AVG and Windows components stopped after securing threat

Hi Willem,

We're glad to look into this & help you.
Initially, we'd like to clarify that we're not in a position to inform you about the exact cause, as we don't have sufficient info as you've mentioned.
From your description, the possibilities for this to happen could be
Multiple antivirus on the same system competing for resources & conflict with each other.
It might have also caused the AVG program, windows components to stop working.
Regarding the threat notification, usually AVG notifies, if it detects any suspicious/malicious content. However, this would not cause the issues that you've mentioned in this thread.
In this regard, we'd suggest you to use a single security software on your computer to check if it helps.
Also, to ensure that all the AVG services are running fine & to ensure that they're not corrupted due to the presence of other antivirus, we'd suggest you to repair AVG program once.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if I should post this question because the event took place some while ago and unfortunately I don't have any logs or screenshots.

About a month ago (16 January) I got a notification from AVG Free that it had secured (or detected, not sure) a threat. At that moment I was browsing the internet, so I wasn't downloading some strange files. This notification popped up only for a very short moment and I was only able to read something with Trj. Then AVG stopped working (Application Error according to the Windows log) and I wasn't able to launch the application any more. Also Windows Defender, task manager and command prompt failed to launch, Windows explorer however was fine and it turned out I hadn't lost any files.

After multiple reboots fortunately my system was able to restore itself. When I checked AVG's virus vault nothing was in it. Unfortunately I don't have any log files from AVG which could give some information about the threat. Also scans with AVG, MalwareBytes, Windows Defender and Bullguard didn't find any viruses or malware.

I understand that it is difficult to give an answer based on this information. I hope someone knows whether this is usual when capturing a virus or not. A trojan that attacks AVG and Windows components and then disappears, or maybe is still somewhere in the system? Or could it be a false positive from AVG with quite some disastrous effect? Also I'm not sure whether I'm fine now or still at risk. Thank you in advance.
