AVG AntiVirus Free conflicting with Gmail in Firefox?

Windows 10 64-bit, Version 1703, Build 15063.250, on Surface Pro 4
AVG AntiVirus Free Version 17.3.3011, definitions 170429-0
Firefox 53.0 (64-bit)

When I use Gmail in Firefox, about 50% of the time I am unable to send an e-mail and get the error, "Oops, there was a server error and your e-mail could not be sent."  If I then right-click on the AVG system tray icon and disable protection, I am then able to send the e-mail 100% of the time.

Is this a bug or do I have something misconfigured?
