AVG antivirus makes firefox ask for master password every time FF is started

Hello Jo,
That's strange, we will look into it.
Please share the screenshot of that password prompt to have a better understanding.
Let us know the exact name and version of AVG you have installed.

It might help if I reset the browser settings to default, but that would mean losing a lot of things that I don't want to lose.

The real question I have is: who is creating that registry entry and why?  Is it firefox or is it AVG?  I know for sure that the registry entry is causing the problem.  (when I did the disable AVG test the registry entry had already been created so I didn't think the disable would affect anything and I was right)

Also I found elsewhere the suggestion to turn off https website scanning in the anti-virus program.  Apparently a number of anti-virus programs are causing this same problem - not just AVG.  I have turned that off and will find out tomorrow if that fixes the problem.

For a while now my firefox has asked for its master password every time I start FF.  On an FF forum I found the culprit to be a registry entry for AVG under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\Certificates\Install.  I deleted the entry and that fixed the problem.  However it came back the next day (the registry entry was re-created).  How do I get AVG to not create that entry?

Okay, Jo.

Thank you for the explanation. You can reach us at your convenient time, we work round the clock.

Please disable AVG and check if you still receive that password prompt.

Right click on AVG icon under system tray next to clock, click on toggle bar to disable it temporary.

Thank you for updating the status, Jo.

As the issue persists even after disabling AVG protection, I can confirm that AVG is not causing this.

The issue is with the FireFox browser and we request you to reset the browser settings to default. This might help you in resolving this.

Hello Jo,

The password prompt is the standard Firefox prompt: Please enter your master password.  This should only be displayed the first time a website login is done.  I am seeing it displayed when I first bring up FF when no login is being done.

I have 19.4.3089 (build 19.4.4318.460) version of AVG.

Tomorrow when the registry entry that causes the problem comes back, I can write exactly what that is here.

I disabled AVG and brought up FF and it still gave me the password prompt immediately.

The registry entry is back.  It has a name of '1' a type of REG_SZ and a value of
C:\ProgramData\AVG\Antivirus\wscert.der

If I delete that registry entry altogether the password prompt is not displayed when I first bring up FF, but the entry is recreated every time I bring up my computer

Yes Jo, you will lose the bookmarks and passwords in your browser.

We would like to clarify the fact that AVG is not causing the issue. Since we have turned off the AVG, Firefox might have changed the Registry but we are not sure.

Disabling the HTTP scan, might allow the other websites to gather your information. So, we recommend you to keep the HTTP scan On.

Sure. If we have confirmed that the issue was due to AVG, we will be able to definitely help you on this matter.

Jo, though HTTPS site are secure there are possibilities for infection to appear on it.
Hence, the scanning for HTTPS will definitely provide additional protection.
We are sure that this isn't due to AVG Antivirus program.
You can uninstall our program and confirm the status.
