I am sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with activating new license number. It could be a 2017 version of AVG that you have installed in which you do not have Options menu as per the instructions you received. Please follow the steps below to activate AVG with new license number.
Open AVG Anti Virus free, click on Menu and select 'About'.
On About page, click on 'Subscription' in the left pane.
Then click on 'Enter license number' to enter your new license number.
The program will update to paid version automatically.
You may have to reboot the PC once to finish the activ

I purchased a 2 year renewal.
In the email I received it says:
To activate...
1. Open the AVG Program.
2. From the Options menu, select Reactivate.
3. Copy&paste your new AVG License Number listed above into the appropriate field, and click the Activate button to confirm.
In case of upgrading from lower AVG edition, a window informing that your new AVG software license gives you access to additional features appears. Click Yes to add these features to your installation. Follow the instructions on your screen and complete the installation process of the new components.
Can you please help as I can not find the Options menu and can not type in the code anywhere.
