Jim, glad you were able to resolve the problem. I've been using AVG Free for almost 13 years and have never had problems until this latest update, so I can't throw rocks at them for this one glitch. Cox Cable (my provider) offers a McAfee anti-virus package as part of my customer support but I prefer AVG because it doesn't give me a hard time with stuff I download for my flight simulator hobby.
Jerry, I too had that problem, probably like ALL paid users. I phoned the help line and in the course of the support and them accessing my computer, I saw Autorun used for first time. They did NOT uncheck the box you did. I downloaded the autorun today after my call with AVG HELP and took same check mark out and now no more avg folder on startup. I have a theory as to why they didn't take it out, but I don't think this is a good place to mention it. Thanks for helping me, and MANY others who I will be sharing this with. A friend with AVG FREE used it already and showed the same as I saw with the paid version but he doesn't get the folder on startup.
I'm having the same problem as Georgi Angelov previously posted. I updated to AVG Free 2016 over the weekend. Now when I start my computer and the boot-up is complete the AVG Application Data folder suddenly opens up on my desktop and a single folder named "AV" is shown as the contents. I have not had this problem with previous installs of AVG Free and I don't want it now. How fo I fix it?

I have the exact same problem
My startup folder is empty. in msconfig/startup´I have avgui and avguix selected. Do I need both?
I've got EXACTLY the same problem. I'm an XP user and it started as soon as I upgraded to AVG 2016 Free about two days ago.
My startup folder is empty and Autoruns.exe don't show anything with the target C:\Documents and Settings\Jim Brown\Application Data\AVG\AV.
How do I get that directory to disappear?
I have no intention of deleting these file. I just don't want them to pop up on my desktop every time I start the computer.
How do I stop this pop up from happening.

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your suggestion regarding "AVG-Secure-Search-Update_1113a".
I too had a similar entry called "AVG-Secure-Search-Update_0913b", but other than the slight name difference, it appeared identical to the one you had. Once I blew it out of my registry, the folder stopped appearing at startup. I know that registry element has been there for a few years, but I never worried about it before since until now it never caused me a a problem.
I get nervous every time AVG publishes their yearly update. Last year's update had a few nasty problems, the worst one for me being the fact that it prevented the O/S from disconnecting USB hard drives. They did eventually get it fixed, but it took several months.
