Chuck,
Please try keep whole conversation in one question/thread to speed up resolution. I would like to appreciate your efforts to try our suggestions on how to resolve the issue.
I request you to run AVG Clear and AVG Remover tools to uninstall AVG free completely and reinstall it. Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No" 
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer"

After restart, run AVG Remover and remove all other supported products and remnants of AVG (ZEN, Framework,…) as mentioned in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG .

I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused. I suggest you to repair AVG free to resolve your issue. To repair your AVG please follow these instructions:

Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Note: Click Settings first if Control Panel is not available in the Start menu.
Open (Programs) -> Programs and Features, or Add or Remove Programs.
Select AVG Antivirus or AVG Protection in the list of programs.
Click the Change or Change/Remove button.
Select Repair.
Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Restart your computer.

When I update by AVG antivirusFREE software, I downloaded the update, restarted my computer, & I got a message that parts of the update could not be loaded.
I tried it many times but without success.
Is there a fix so that I can again have AVG antivirusFREE?
