Marion, is it a free version of trial version of AVG that you are using? Please make sure that latest virus definitions are installed and verify the issue. If the issue persists, we'd request to uninstall AVG and re install it.
Can't do screenshots, just checked again and the URL has been added to exemption list. Still can't get onto their website though. All this has happened since the last AVG update.
When trying to log in to the site this is the message I am getting
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /login on this server.
Reason: The client software did not provide a hostname using Server Name Indication (SNI), which is required to access this server."
Hello Marlon,
We will work together to sort this issue.
Please disable AVG temporarily on your computer and check if you are able to access this website.
To disable AVG temporarily, please right click on the AVG icon present at the bottom right corner of your desktop(System Tray) and use the toggle switch to "Disable Protection".
If you are able to access this website, then please follow the steps from this link https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-make-exclusions-from-all-scans-and-shields to add this URL to AVG exception.
You can also submit the URL to AVG https://www.avg.com/en-us/false-positive-file-form for analysis.
It does point to the fact that AVG is the underlying cause. I am not very technical so I am waiting for my husband to access the technical help on the link I have been sent. He will do it eventually. Meanwhile I am accessing the site using Tor Browser. That could be a possible temporary solution for you too Flat
I recently received the following, follow-up message in an e-Mail from someone named Prokop.
"The provided URL doesn't seem to be detected by AVG. Could you please send us a screenshot of the detection message you're getting? | AVG
I am not sure what was meant by: "The provided URL doesn't seem to be detected by AVG"? Detected in what sense? All I know is that when I tried to access the URL that I provided to you without first adding it to my "Exceptions" list I received the following textual message:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access <whatever particular web page I was trying to access at the time> on this server.
Reason: The client software did not provide a hostname using Server Name Indication (SNI), which is required to access this server."
That is it. That is all that was displayed to me on my computer screen. No AVG error messages per se. All I know is that IF I didn't put the supplied URL into my "Exceptions" list I got this error when my AVG antivirus software was enabled. IF I temporarily disabled the AVG antivirus software, OR… added the URL to my "Exceptions" list, I had no problems. In other words, the error seemed to be directly related to my usage (or, conversely non-usage) of the AVG software. I don't know what else I can really tell you?
Hello Flat,
We're sorry to hear this.
Are you using the free or paid version of AVG?
If it is the paid version, do contact our chat team using this https://support.avg.com/support_tech_chat?l=en link to get this resolved.
If not, please confirm whether the issue gets resolved when AVG Antivirus/Internet Security is turned off.
To disable, click on "Menu–>Settings–>Troubleshooting–>Passive Mode" from the AVG Antivirus/Internet Security program interface.
Use the slider icon to enable passive mode which will turn off the protection temporarily.
Keep us informed about the status.
I just want to report that I am having a similar problem to Marion Davenport. I can no longer access one of my favourite pension related websites. I have tried from both Internet Exploer V11 and Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Any attempts to access anything on the website returns the same error message that Marion reported:
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /<whatever> on this server.
Reason: The client software did not provide a hostname using Server Name Indication (SNI), which is required to access this server."
I have also tried adding the URL for the website of interest to my AVG "EXCEPTIONS" list; but that doesn't appear to have helped.
I have also worked with the technical support folks for the website of issue to me. After doing so, I do tend to believe that the issue lies wth the AVG software on my personal computer. Of course, they or I may be mistaken in this regard?
Anyhow, at this juncture I just wanted to make you aware that Marion is not alone regarding this issue.
Hello Flat,
Sorry for the confusion. They requested you to share the screenshot of detection popup. Here, in your case, AVG didn't detected the site as threat but you can't access that site.
Please share the screenshot of that forbidden message you received to escalate it further.
Let's check which component is blocking your site.
Open AVG Antivirus Free -> Menu -> Settings -> Components -> disable one by one and check if you could access the site.
Since last AVG update I am unable to access my utility provider's site using IE, Edge or Firefox . Have tried to enter it on the exceptions but that is not being accepted either. Anyone else having problems accessing websites that are frequently used since the last update.
Marlon, please share the screenshot http://avgclick.me/getscreenshot of the error message you receive when you try to add this URL to AVG exception list.
We will check the same and assist you further.
I can access the website when I disable AVG, already done that the other day to gain access. The protection is there for a purpose and to disable it is leaving one wide open. I have also tried to add the URL to exclusions but your exclusions will not accept it.
Flat, it looks like the ticket was analyzed and found that the website wasn't detected as threat by AVG.
If you would like to get further assistance, do reply to their email as they have requested the screenshot of threat detection.

No it is not the free version it is a purchased version for several machines. If nothing improves I will ask hubby to uninstall and re install. To be honest it is happening on all 3 of our computers that has the same purchased AVG so I cannot see how all machines have been corrupted the same way plus we have used 3 different browsers with no joy. The utility provider is adament that it is not their problem but ours. Checked that all is okay with our ISP and no problems there.
I can access the site when AVG is disabled, found that the other day. Tried to add the URL to exclusions and it is not accepted. Been playing with this for the last 7 days. 14 days now been unable to access my utility account.
I WAS using the FREE version of the AVG antivirus software. Having said that, to my way of thinking, it really should not matter if I was using the free or paid version? Marion Davenport is using the PAID version; and experiencing the same problem.
To answer one of your questions - yes - my website access issue disappeared when I briefly disabled the AVG antivirus software. But, of course I did not want to function in such a vulnerable state for very long. After all, to date I have only experienced the problem (and aforementioned error message) in relation to one specific website.
So… what I have done since my initial post on this thread? Well, for starters I uninstalled the FREE version of the AVG antivirus software from my PC. I then installed the FREE version of the AVAST antivirus software. Yes, I realize that AVAST took over AVG some time ago. As such, I was not surprised when I was presented with an interface and options that I was already quite familiar with. But, I thought I would at least give the (possibly improved?) parent company software a try. Well, to my dismay - but not surprise - I encountered the exact same problem when trying to access my "nemesis" website. So, I temporarily disabled the newly installed AVAST antivirus software; and my problem went away once again. OK. It was time to make another attempt at recording this "nemesis" website URL as an "Exception" within the AVAST antivirus software. After doing so (and re-enabling the AVAST antivirus software once again of course) my website access problem went away. So, I am now in an antivirus protected state on my PC that I can comfortablly live with. Now, admittedly, what I do not know with 100% certainty is whether or not I had maybe (?) improperly entered the offending URL into my "Exception" list when I was still running the prior, free AVG antivirus software. I very well may have? But, I guess that is water under the bridge now. As I stated a bit earlier, things are now working in an acceptable manner for me.
Marion, just as a side note, I am not familiar with the Tor browser - but, I do appreciate you making the suggestion. Good luck with getting your issue resolved to your satisfaction. And thanks to all of the technical support folks who are trying to make that happen. I will be interested to hear whether or not there is ever a (heaven forbid) "bug" identified within the underlying antivirus software - be it the AVG or the AVAST versions. I would be pleased IF I could someday clear this one entry from my "Exceptions" list.
Appreciate the details.
Please attempt a re installation and let us know if the issue persists.
