Wondering why AVG Secure browser installed, when I did not explicitly allow it to. Additionally, why would it set itself as default browser when during the set up phase I chose custom and deselected the option for it to be default browser. This is definitely behaviour more reminiscent of malware than a security product.

You will get an option to opt out/in AVG Secure Browser at the bottom left corner of installation screen in AVG Antivirus. By default, this option is enabled and if the product get installed, it will automatically set as the default browser for your device.
