Sean M thanks I'll check into that!
We've been using AVG Business at work for a few years, started with 2013 through 2016 and recently upgraded to 2018 since 2016 is going EOL. Now it's unusuable. We are a franchisee and our stores have an office PC which we had the relay or whatever they actually call that peice of software which would pick up the updates from our server in our data center, then the POS systems would pick up the updates from the office PC. I was finally told on a call with AVG support that setup is no longer supported, that they all have to be picked up from the internet or the AVG server. Annoyed but ok we'll set them all up to pull from the server here.
So I changed it so they all pull from the server in our data center and in doing this it seems to kill the network in the local networks at the stores. Meaning once I kick off an update at the store I can do a constant ping to the store's router and see the replies go from solid 40ms in response up to several hundred then start dropping packets. The really odd thing is this happens even if I only update 1 machine in the store, which would be just like before where we always had the office PC pick up updates from here and we never had that happen. This seems to affect all 1200+ stores and I even went into our routers and used QOS on port 4158 to limit the speed down to 100k and it STILL happens! If I move it to 50k then the connection seems to still be high but stable, but also that makes it so slow to pick up updates that they never seem to finish.
So I pose the question, wtf is going on here? Anybody have any ideas? I'm really thinking we are just going to drop AVG at this point and find something else but if somebody can think of a reason for this or how to see about fixing I'd like to hear it because AVG business support has been useless.
Hello Casey,

There would really be no way to correct this poor design created by AVG. You could try changing dns records to point to your desktops but depending on the AVG validation tools for updates, it likely wouldn't work. You would think a company with a business offering would allow WSUS style updates to limit the effect on the network, but then again, this is a company ran by AVAST. I don't really care if I get banned from this forum for saying this, but you should consider a product with better centralized management and deployment features. We use a certain competitor which rhymes with mrend ticro to manage a large infrastructure at my work and rarely have any issues, and never have had issues when it comes to bandwidth usage during update deployment as they allow you to deploy nodes (such as your desktops) to push updates out to remote sites. I only use AVG products at home and that was due to getting the licenses dirt cheap, but to be honest, I can't wait for the licenses to expire so I can switch to someone else.
