Thank you very much! I was going to do just that, but I was suddenly made afraid that it would miss something, that AVG Clear was needed in order to be sure I got.
In fact, Windows XP was always easy to Add or Remove Programs (it just took a moment to populate the list!)
Now with your answer, I am confident to just do it that way, and thank you again so kindly for responding!
I have AVG Free running and it is using 50% of the CPU at all times.
From searching, I see the recommendation is to remove AVG and reinstall it, but to use AVG Clear to be sure of a COMPLETE removal. When I try to run AVG Clear I get an error that says
"avgclear.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
which I assume is because the computer is Windows XP.
My question is: Can anyone verify why I am not getting AVG Clear to run, and how can I solve THAT problem in Windows XP? Otherwise, how can I FULLY and COMPLETELY uninstall the AVG Free on my Windows XP machine if I cannot make AVG Clear run?
For those who will instead ask why I stick to Windows XP, it is the following:
The machine is used exclusively as a file server, for my home WAN, but is accessed by a number of devices in different physical locations, therefore it must have internet exposure, and thus the AVG.
However, I keep it Windows XP because
A) XP had a more archaic, but much more thorough and easy to use disk search ability,
that later versions of Windows cannot match, I search the storage disks on this machine
top to bottom and front to back all the time, which takes a few seconds to a minute or so,
and ALWAYS finds EVERYTHING that matches. Whereas mirror drives I have had in other
newer systems for years take 15-30 minutes or an hour to search, and always miss things.
B) XP until very recently has always been easily accessible from any device on my router,
whereas everything from Windows 7 forward is constantly becoming unavailable to various
devices on my network after updates, and causing me gray hair to try to figure out what
Microsoft did now to keep me from accessing my data.
I am not looking for any discussion of how to learn to get around the search problems, I wasted YEARS trying to do that. My file server is and always will be a Windows XP machine.
I am seeking help for uninstalling the AVG Free FULLY and COMPLETELY from the XP machine, so I can reinstall it clean.
Thank you for any help
