Is AVG ( free version ) compatible with Windows10  Defender , please ?

Antoinette, With Win 10 Windows Defender was re-classified into an AntiVirus prog which will conflict with AVG so it should be disabled on your system when AVG is installed.
Windows Defender is a software product that attempts to detect and remove malware. It was first released as a free antispyware program download for WindowsXP, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and made into a full antivirus program replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions.

We recommended to disable windows defender in order to avoid any conflicting issue and ensure the better performance.

Thank you Alan  , not sure what's best to do now , as the first answer I was given says it's okay ? Would you say AVG will give better protection anyway … once I've disabled Windows defender ?
