AVG CPU usage, overheating and crashing

Perhaps I was unclear about my goals. I don't want to uninstall AVG; I want AVG to work on my computer without making it overheat and crash. Is there a way to get it to stop using so much CPU power? I tried following your instructions to uninstall AVG, then reinstalled it–I'm still having the same problem.

I have the free basic version of AVG. I've used AVG since 2011 and it's never caused any major problems. On 31 March AVG updated itself and apparently something drastic changed, because suddenly AVG severely overtaxing my system, causing the computer to rapidly overheat and crash. I restarted the computer several times, but I couldn't run the computer for more than ten minutes without it crashing, and I had to entirely uninstall AVG to render the computer functional again. I tried reinstalling AVG, only to find the same problem. AVG wasn't fighting any other antivirus software on my computer–is there any way to fix this problem?
