AVG Dashboard - embarassing notice on start

Periodically when starting the AVG dashboard after startup, I get an "well! this is embarassing" notice. The clear implication is that AVG is NOT running.  Usually a re-start clears this, but today, it repeated 3 times in succession, even after a warm re-boot.  An attempt to do a chat about it to the support line basically timed out waiting for the chat panel to load.  So I closed, the whole PC down, and did something else for an hour.

On re-start, after the normal opening frenzy (windows running desktop displayed and the start menu apparently finished (normally, this is as empty as I can make it), at the point where I normally use the dashboard to check updates to the AV files and software, instead I checked the task manager service page, and it indicated two AVG services for anti-virus and firewall were running. After using an application for about 10 minutes, I tried opening the AVG dashboard again, and bingo, it opened with no notices at all.

This embarassing notice on dashboard start seems to be timing dependent,  linked to  various startup activities going on even after it looks like windows is up and running.  BUT does anyone know exactly why that's so? and  is there a configuration tweak to ensure it doesn't happen?

PC is running Win7
