AVG Firewall keeps asking rule for the same application

Hello Andrea,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

We have already replied to your original post and please keep up the conversation from there.
Thank you.

We appreciate your patience, Paul.
This was reported as a bug and it was already fixed.
The fix was relased through an automatic update.
Perform update as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Update-AVG-Antivirus) and check the status by restarting your computer.
Thank you.

I have the same problem as well, it started after I was advised by the program to install an update immediately. No idea what the problem was the update was supposed to solve and I have no idea if it was actually solved. What I do know is that I got this problem which I didn't ask for. I trust AVG are working hard to solve it, it just doesn't look that way …

It would be very helpful if AVG would at least let us know what's going on and what they are doing to help us, their paying customers. At this time I realy do not have the feeling that "AVG has got us covered"!

Hello,
Before AVG decided to take control of the Windows Firewall rules (whatever the version), the Windows rules settings worked perfectly.

The original configuration when installing AVG, is that AVG handles it silently, something that in many other features is positive compared to other antivirus and that is why I have been using AVG for years.

However, I am one of those who prefers to do things manually and I like to decide who accesses the Internet or not. At first one had to get used to those screens every so often, thinking that the CHECKMARK that says to remember the configuration would be an automatic way to manage the Windows Firewall rules, but NOT.

For a few months it was bearable, but it has already become a little PITA … (pain in the …)

I have followed for more than a year all the methods that AVG suggests, configured the rules for applications, checked that they all say "auto-decide", and I keep getting exactly the same questions. AVG simply doesn't care about the "remember answer" checkmark, as every time there is an "update", they reappear and I KNOW WHY.

AVG Internet Secury firewall rule settings just allow you to select from 4 options:

1. Default rule (Work / Medium Risk Zone)
2. Self-Decide
3. Block
4. Ask

In Windows, there is no Auto Decide per se. You can Block, Ask, or Allow, and those work perfectly (in Windows Firewall)

In AVG, when you checkmark the "remember answer", the resulting real rule setting always be Auto-Decide, regardless of whether you tell it to block it, since the moment AGD does an update, the blocked ones become Auto- Decide.

What is really auto decide or Default rule that its the same. There are people that know what they are doing and they will not damage AVG's reputation, so please add a fifth item (5) that really save our settings. You can add more security questions to anyone who definitely wants to say that program X does not access the internet anymore.

Thank you.

I've been having this same problem now for I don't know how long now and it's beyond annoying! I'm very seriously thinking about calling it quits with AVG once my subscription ends soon and finding something else to use. Not only am I having this extremely annoying issue, but I noticed that the amount of stupid and annoying interrupting pop up messages have increased quite a bit, eventhough it's supposed to be set to Do Not Disturb or Gaming Mode or whatever it is that's supposed to quiet their messages and stop them from interrupting you every time you turn around or blink. After reading through this thread and seeing everyone else having the same problems and clearly not getting any help with the issue for such a long time now, it really makes me want to part ways with AVG even more now, especially seeing on here that customer support is clearly lacking to the point where they almost seem to not even care, seeing that based on some of the replies from AVG on here that they aren't even paying any attention to or just ignoring what people are saying in their posts, given their thoughtless hand book replies and then later just replying that they've escalated the issue, which to this day has still not been resolved.
Anyways, for those of you that still need help with this problem, here is what I have done to help with this extremely annoying problem. Open AVG Internet Security > Menu > Settings > Basic Protection > Enhanced Firewall > View Firewall Rules > and click on the Application Rules tab. With the Rule List open, next you go to the application rule you want to fix and click on downward arrow to expand the application rules, then click on the pencil icon next to the trash can icon on the Default Rule line, then the "Edit rule: Default Rule" window will open, next you then change the action from ASK to whatever you want it to be, then click Save, and then go down the list and repeat that same process for every application rule that keeps popping up and bugging you.

It looks like AVG doesn't want our business. This is absolutely ridiculous having to go through this daily. My subscription expires in September. I'm not renewing it this time.

Fix this stupid pop up message! I'm not going to use the "auto decide" option! one year later and this is still happening! jeez!

Hy guys, right now I open a new thread for the same issue, after more than one year and a lot of updates no one in AVG manage this problem, we can also uninstall the software, but our money are already gone, so for them nothing change
Same stuff for Avast, of course
Unfortunately I found this behaviour also in other suite… Mah… is so hard to make a good enough firewall? Why no one ask an help to Comodo? For sure they can teach something…

I too, am now having this problem. I think it may be connected to my use of vitrual machines (and the networks they create, or my VPN solution which I used before these pop-ups started repeating for same applications.  I must have clicked 200 times today.

I performed clean install of AVG and issue hasn’t disappeared. After internet disconnection firewall keeps asking the same questions first is svchost.exe and after lot of others including AVGUI.exe. I bought AVG because of firewall ability to ask what application wants communication connection to outside world. Most users don’t realize it, but in many cases high quality firewall is far more important function than any other AV features. It is why I bought AVG. This is not first issue I saw in AVG firewall.
I remember issue, when apps had prescribed connection rules and firewall behaved like it was turned off completely. Since that time my trust in AVG firewall drastically decreased. AVG had good price for good quality, but now I am still more and more reconsidering (regarding also data selling issue) whether I should buy AVG next time. To be honest I am sad. I don’t know what happened, I really don’t but AVG is making their paying customers very sad. Just to remind AVG, Microsoft windows contains their own AV and as major market differentiator I see just this interactive firewall. Once they apply interactive firewall to their operating system, I see no reason at all to pay for AVG. I loved AVG, but now I am sad to even write this letter.

Hi AVG
Since installing the updated version of Internet Security got released on 1st April I get these prompts constantly too, for the same applications that already have rules saved for the application. As the OP stated, any network change starts the process again, whether that be a different wireless network broadcast or a VPN connection. Please sort this ASAP as it's infuriating spending the first five to ten minutes of each computer use just accepting or denying rules.

Dear AVG,

I set my firewall rule to "always ask" whether an app can connect to the internet, and I put check mark on "remember answer" if I trust an app and if it's known to me so it will be on my firewall rule to always allow everytime it wants access to the internet.

Issue is this....

My AVG Internet Security got its update 2 days ago, since that, it keeps asking for firewall rule for the same application.

I reinstalled AVG Internet Security and it's doing the same thing so I loaded my backup settings from 8 days ago (I regularly do backup) and the issue is still persisting.

I check the app in the firewall app list for example:
C:\Program Files\SteelSeries\SteelSeries Engine 3\SteelSeriesEngine3.exe

It is listed in there, but firewall is still asking me whether or not to allow that app.

Please provide solution, this function is very important to my needs as I need to constantly block or allow apps to protect my works and maintain my privacy for those apps that are known to having privacy violation.

Additional information:
OS: Windows 10 1909 (Latest version)
Chipset brand: Asus Z270-E

I'm running v20.3.3120 and am still getting this issue multiple times per day, mostly from chrome, but also svcHost, I've tried resetting the rules manually, and pressing all of the available options on the pop-up dialog, but it still comes back over and over.

Here are some, I noticed this issue is being triggered when I change connection, once it get connected to the other connection from the other one, firewall asks again for apps that are currently having activity over the internet which got interrupted during the transition of connection.

Hi Paul,

We're glad to look into this & help you. Appreciate your technical knowledge in restoring the settings & reinstalling AVG Internet Security.
There is a possibility for the application rule to be modified after the recent update.
Hence, we'd suggest you to check the application rules configured on your computer. To adjust access restrictions & block connections to unauthorized access, you can follow the steps in this article.
Please try the above step & let us know if it helps.

I am having the same issue with the April 1st update.

Support sent me a response telling me to use the repair option of the uninstall routine in windows 10. I tried that being sceptical but it seems to have worked for now.  You must re-boot after the repair. Hope this helps.

I agree that this is extremely annoying. Can we get this fixed please!

I have this problem too right after the last update for my two laptops with windows 10. I contact the support members of avg and they remotely operated my computer. However, the problem still exists. I did a clean uninstall and a fresh install, the problem still exists. I added the folder "windows" to exceptional list, and the problem exists too (svchost.exe). As several people said before, network change starts the process again, for example, switching from vpn connection to direct connection. I believe this is a bug. The firewall can't remember my answer any more.
