Hello Tim.
We regret for any inconvenience caused. Please note that Firewall in AVG AntiVirus for Android is disabled by default and it does not pop up automatically to enable it. Firewall can only be enabled manually by going in to AVG AntiVirus 'Menu'. Also in your description, you mentioned that "it reported that it failed to get root access", which means rooting did not proceed and completed successfully.
When you try to enable "Firewall" from menu, you will get a disclaimer from AVG about Rooting the device. However, both AVG and Android Device manufacturers advise against rooting because it voids your warranty. I would recommend you to check the device with Device manufacturer once.
Hi
I have paid-for AVG internet security (multi-device). It asked me if I wanted to enable the firewall - that seemed a good idea so I said yes. It said that it needed root access (please click here or similar) and then reported that it failed to get root access.
My phone (a Samsung S8) now is upset - some of the built-in Samsung features fail to work because it says that my phone has been rooted. PLUS the firewall didn't work. Lose-Lose as far as I can see!
How can I persuade my phone that it has not been rooted? Any ideas?
I have looked on the AVG help pages and found something that makes me even more annoyed as the AVG help text says "For most of the functionality within AVG AntiVirus rooting is NOT required. In fact, a rooted device is generally not as secure and therefore rooting is not recommended. Users who choose to root their devices are exposed to higher risks, and that is why we include features to provide additional protection.". Great! Bit late to tell me this now…
All help gratefully received. I didn't really expect a trusted app like AVG to do this to my phone without proper warning.
Tim.
