The virus definitions download has now got AVG working so I can do a scan. Will this have cured the Cannot connect to Server issue or will I have to continue to update manually from time to time?
Rob, Which Windows OS are you actually using?.. Win XP SP2 or SP3?. Presently there's a problem with auto-updating AVG. If you still have an issue have a look @ this article (http://avgclick.me/UpdateAVG) [B. Updating AVG offline (from a local directory)]. For AVG Free update files have a look @ this webpage (http://free.avg.com/download-update).

I am running Windows XP and have had no problems with AVG prior to the 2015 Update. Now, whenever AVG does its update for virus definitions, I hear the bing-bong and a message states I cannot connect to the server.
I have followed all available advice on this forum and others. I have checked my internet settings over and over - I can still access websites through Chrome with no problem.
My emails still work and AVG does do the check as normal.
My other PC runs AVG Free 2014 and frequently updates with no problems.
The only Firewall I have is Windows Firewall and AVG is there in the exceptions.
When I couldn't get AVG working, I removed it and tried Avast!, which worked fine until it required a full update of the software and then it wouldn't allow me to visit many internet sites and kept blocking them so I removed this with their removal tool.
I've re-installed AVG Free but the "Cannot connect to server" error has returned.
What can I do? I've been tearing my hair out and now I am nearly bald! Please help me keep the remaining tuft.

My advice is if you are using an older version of AVG, then please upgrade to version 2015, following these steps
