AVG free 2015 install & update problems

Hello Jon. I request you to follow the steps below to update the product manually.
Go to www.avg.com/update.
Select the update files you need (typically Virus definitions and All necessary modules for your operating system) and download them to a portable media, e.g. a USB flashdisk.
Open your AVG program.
In the menu Options, click Update from directory.
Navigate to the folder where you stored the update files, and click OK.
Thank you. Kishore, AVG Customer Care.

I've already tried avg_free_stb_all_2014_4745_cnet.exe

The problem is that AVG 'knows better than me' and the installer instead installs 2015.  If I use the standalone version of 2014, I'm told it's an old version and I can't continue.

I even tried using the 2014 files in the SetupBackup directory on my laptop, but it fails when I enter the key I'm using on my laptop.  I assume you check the key and only allow it to be used once.

BUT !!!

You're avoiding the main point.  WHY is there no URL menu item under updates in 2015 free?

If the free product is this flaky, why on earth should I want to pay for anything else?

I had a problem with Win XP SP2 hanging after loading AVGIDSEH.SYS, so removed AVG and reinstalled.

The latest free 2015 aborts the installation process immediately with "a problem has been encountered etc.".  My workaround was to install 7-zip and to expand the AVG archive and then install.

Once installed, update fails, and I had to update manually from a directory.  I have noticed that there is no URL menu item under Options->Advanced settings->Update, just Proxy and Manage.  I have AVG Free 2014 on a laptop and it does have the URL menu item which stores the paths of the main and backup servers.

I tried to install 2014 which gets around the 7-zip compression problem, but it forces me to install 2015 which is where the problem lies with no URL option.

I know the program is free, but AVG is messing up my PC big time.  Caused the hang in the first place, and now I can't reinstall reliably and update automatically.

A solution would be appreciated.

Many thanks
