The problem with Outlook disappeared when I uninstalled Email Protection and changed Outlook, Tools, Email Accounts, EMail, View or Change, Change as follows:
a) Incoming Mail Server (POP)= changed to pop.gmail.com from 127.0.0.1
b) More Settings, Advanced, under Incoming Server (POP3) changed "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" to ticked from unticked. Port changed to 995 from 10110.
Now I don't have AVG Email Protection but Outlook works. One blog (Disable virus scanner integration? - Robert 365) says that Outlook provides enough protection anyway and I don't need AVG Email Protection so I plan not to re-install AVG Email Protection. What do you think?

In response to a recommendation from AVG, on Aug 24, 2015 I installed avg free 2015 upgrade to 2015.0.6125 hotfix 8. Now, when my Outlook 2003 tries to read emails from my gmail account it times out with 0x8004210A or 0x80042108.
Are there new settings required by this hotfix or any other changes needed?
How can I backout hotfix 8?
I'm on Vista SP2 Build 6002.
I tried disabling AVG temporarily but that didn't fix it. I also uninstalled the previous AVG Free 2015 that was updated last night, then downloaded and installed avg_free_stb_all_6125p1_177.exe, as recommended by an AVG support person on the phone, but that didn't fix it either.
In checking my records I notice I had the same problem when I installed AVG Free 2012. It appears that I fixed it then by downloading and installing a MS Outlook add-in. I checked my Outlook and there is no AVG Outlook add-in installed currently in it.
Where can I get the MS Outlook add-in for AVG Free 2015 if one is needed?
Regards,
