Do you get any error message from AVG when you try to save documents?
If not, we request you to disable AVG temporarily on your computer and check if you are able to save these documents.
To disable AVG temporarily, please right click on the AVG icon present at the bottom right corner of your desktop(System Tray) and use scroll bar to "Disable Protection".
I cannot save Office docs unless I shut AVG off. I also cannot, as suggested, adjust ransomware settings as they are not available on AVG free.
How do I enable saving of documents?

Let's check which component of AVG AntiVirus is causing the issue.
To do so, Open AVG AntiVirus > Menu > Settings > Components. Disable each component and monitor the status.
