I apparently didn't explain the problem properly. Instead of saying it appears as an open folder, I should have said, it appears as an open window. If you close the window, there is no corresponding folder left on the desktop. If you right click the title bar of the window, your only choices are,Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize and Close. Still very confusing.
Alan, I apologize. I replied to the AVG survey stating, I never received a reply. Then, I went further back in my unread email and found your response. The problem is on a laptop computer that is not used for email so, I can't send you a screenshot. However, I can tell you that an open folder appears on the desktop upon bootup. The open folder is named "AVG." Inside this folder is another folder labeled "Antivirus." That folder labeled "Antivirus," is located is at:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\AVG
Inside the folder labeled Antivirus is a folder labeled "Cache", a folder labeled "log" and a file labeled "ulcred2."
The folder "User" identifies the ID of the person who's settings are currently loaded and resides in the folder "All Users."
Sorry for the confusion.

Hello Byron,
Please send me the screenshot http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot of the AVG icon that is created on your desktop.
Click on the icon and check if it opens AVG program.
I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3 on a laptop because of software on that computer that can't be replaced and is still used on a regular basis.
I just re-installed AVG Free after removing it from my laptop for a couple of months to try a different product. I wasn't happy with the other product. I just re-installed AVG to give you guys another shot at it. Immediately after the reinstall, I'm having the same problem that made me leave AVG to try a different product in the first place. When my desktop screen finishes loading upon boot-up, I find a new folder labeled "AVG" on my desktop. How can I eliminate this from happening?
The same problem exists after running the Clear Tool, rebooting and reinstalling the AVG application. As additional information, I resized that AVG window and rebooted again. When the computer finished it's boot proceedure the open window appeared once more but, in it's resized configuration.
I've received your email on how to collect the info needed and downloaded the tool. As I have explained more than once, the problem exists on a computer that is not used for email. Please tell me how to transfer the collected output information from that laptop, place it on this computer and attach it to an email to forward to you.
Thanks for your patience.
Byron, thank you for the detailed information.
The file that is created is a genuine AVG file. This must have created as a temporary folder. Please remove the same from the desktop and check if you receive the folder gets created again.

Thank you for the clarification.
I would help us to investigate further, if you provide the (screenshot) of AVG folder that is created.
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

There is no "Program files (x86)" folder on this computer. There is also no "AVG Clear" on this computer. I had this same problem when the program was originally updated awhile back. I eventually removed AVG via the control panel and installed Panda. Panda had some issues so, I uninstalled it via the control panel also. I reinstalled AVG and the problem reocurred. I uninstalled it again. Downloaded another copy and reinstalled. And here we are, back again to square one. When you refer to the AVG Remover Tool, I assume you are simply referring to the control panel "Add or Remove Programs" section. Am I correct? Keep in mind, this is Windows XP Home Edition.
Byron, For your info, just in case that you are unaware, you can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
AVG Guru
Byron, I referred to AVG Clear tool not remover tool. Use the AVG Clear to remove the latest version of the AVG product:
Save and close all running applications as necessary.
Click ( here ) to download AVG Clear, then run the AVG_Clear.exefile.
Click " No " when the AVG Clear prompts you to restart Windows in Safe Mode.
Follow the steps displayed on the screen, then select the Uninstall Zen and Framework check box and click Uninstall.
Click Restart computer to complete the uninstallation.
Then reinstall the AVG Antivirus free. If the issue persists, then we need to analyze the issue further, I need to submit your concern to our senior technicians along with other diagnostic logs. I have sent you an email with steps on how to collect and upload the data required for analyzing your issue. Please check your inbox and spam/junk folder as well.
