Dear Akash
Thank you for your reply. I went to the link you provided: http://avgread.me/1BVxDSY and followed the directions. My computer is still doing the exact same thing as before –
When I go into UPDATE
It states UPDATING …
STEP 1/2
Downloading file: servers.def.vpx
(shows no overall progress)
and then unknown error
then
Downloading file: prod-pgm.vpx
(shows no overall progress)
and then unknown error
my settings are Automatic update
and
Enable streaming updates
HOWEVER, on my first AVG screen it shows AVG AntiVirus FREE
You have basic protection
Last computer scan: 4 days ago
Virus definition: 3 days ago
So, I'm back to my original issue. AND, does the program only auto update the virus definitions every week or so? If so, that is not very good.
I have NEVER had these issues with previous versions of AVG Anti-virus FREE. What is going on?
Please help!
Hi Sm,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused, please try repairing http://avgread.me/1BVxDSY your AVG Anti Virus FREE once and then check the issue. Due to recent update with our AVG programs, we made this changes and sorry to inform you that it is not possible to install your AVG programs without AVG Zen interface for free and unlimited programs. It helps the user to view or manage all other devices.
Thank you!

Sean,
I apologize for the delay in responding to you. If the issue with updates still persist, please get in touch with our technical support team ( http://avgclick.me/AVGtechnical ) for help. Please also be informed that virus database updates don't have any firm schedule - they are released only when necessary.
However AVG is continuously downloading "streaming updates" which are much smaller and contains new detection, False Postive fixes etc.
This is done to optimize speed of updates and usage of the internet as streaming updates are very small and may contain just one specific update. On the other hand, the virus database updates are big, take longer to download and install and contains all previous updates including streaming ones, major fixes etc.
SM Corbin,
I have the same issue on my wife's Windows 8 computer and my Windows 7 computer. I couldn't figure it out on hers; had to completely remove it (it was blocking her internet access too). Fortunately, it's not blocking mine (Windows 7), but it will NOT update. Repair tool - No. Complete removal w/removal tool - No. Fresh install - No. I've been with AVG for years now, but whatever update they did last really messed the update feature up big-time. I'm fearing I may have to waste my two-year subscription and go with a different provider. Very frustrating.
I cannot get my AVG FREE Anti-virus (see topic) to update. When I go to the update it states Steps 1/2 Download files: servers.def.vpx Unknown error
I took my computer back to the shop and the technician managed to get it to update (first time in 7 days)! What is going on - and how do I fix it?
Second of all, the interface for this version really sucks! I am running an older version on my old desktop computer and like it much better – and it updates virus definitions properly.
