AVG Free anti-virus fails to update

Hello Gray,

We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Are you using the Service Pack 3 for the Windows XP or the older version like Service Pack 2 or 1 ?

For years, AVG Free anti-virus has successfully and automatically updated, immediately on starting up the desktop (Windows XP).
I have not added, changed or deleted any software, but now, it refuses to update, even manually.
When trying to sidestep by downloading the latest version, that fails too.
I read    Incompatible operating system   Error code: 0xe001f96c
Any advice?

My XP Home version is 32-bit Service Pack 2.
Is this now unsupported?
