Avg free antivirus switched off in windows 10

Hi Sarah,

This is the problem that I am encountering in that the computer is not allowing me to switch on AVG. I reach the folder which tells me that AVG is switched off ; highlight AVG and click the button to turn on AVG but the computer is not accepting this command and AVG stays switched off. I have re-started the computer and attempted the same procedure to switch on AVG but the computer is just not accepting the instruction to turn on Free AVG. My question was concerned with how I get around the computer not accepting the command to turn on Free AVG.

Any ideas on this?

Kind regards,

Wayne

Hi,
Is this the page that you want? If you want another page can I please have the path/address for it?

Thanks,

Hi Balasubramanian,

I followed your link and successfully remove AVG with AVG Clear. From your other link I downloaded the AVG iostall .exe but when I ran it I got The following:-

User-added image

I rebooted the computer and again tried to install AVG but exactly the same message came up! Enough is enough I thought so I will attempt my own solution with the following steps:-

1. System Restore to Windows Update 19/01/20 and AVG now showing as turned on.
2. Reboot computer and Windows does its update AVG still showing as turned on
3. Reboot computer and Windows installs the missing updates with lots of warnings now in "notifications" that I have no antivirus etc. etc.
4. Ignore "notifications" and reboot computer and AVG now showing as turned on with Windows Defender "snoozed"

Not quite sure what is going on but I do wonder if there is something going on with Windows Updates.

Hope this helps you,

Wayne

Appreciate your efforts in sharing us the screenshot, Wayne.
We're glad to clarify this for you. Once you install the paid version of AVG protection program on your computer, the firewall & security will be monitored by AVG & the Windows security/firewall will be disabled.
As AVG Free Antivirus is the basic protection, the Windows Firewall is monitoring the incoming/outgoing activities on your computer. However, security is monitored by AVG Antivirus. This is the usual behavior.
Regarding the security provider's status on your wife's computer, sometimes, the security center might incorrectly report the security provider's status due to an unrepaired windows repository. To check this, please share us the screenshot of the security center page from your wife's computer.

Hi, On my wife's computer she had a notification that her installed AVG Free antivirus had been switched off. Having found the "button" to switch AVG back on again it stubbornly refused to do anything but stay "off". I guess that Windows Defender has been switched on and that I might need to do something about this before again attempting to switch AVG on. Once I have successfully turned AVG back on again what settings should I make for windows defender and firewall?
Hoping that someone can help,
Wayne

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve your issue, Wayne.

The reason you've received the pop-up when installing AVG is already a process has been initiated.

I request you to monitor the status and check if you receive the same again.

Please feel free to reach us as we work 24*7.

This is the page that we requested, Wayne.
We're unsure why the AVG Antivirus free program status is not appearing on windows 'security providers'.
We request you to run our AVG clear tool as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Uninstall-AVG-software-Clear-Remover) to remove the traces of AVG Antivirus free.
Once it is done, reinstall the program as mentioned in this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free) and if the issue persist, we can escalate the case to senior team for analysis.
Keep us posted.

Hi Sarah,

Interesting!! AVG successfully uninstalled and re-installed. When I go into "Manage Providers" for antivirus AVG is no longer listed so I do not even have the option to highlight it and attempt to switch it on. The only provider listed is Windows Defender and this is switched on.

Any more thoughts on a solution?

Kind regards,

Wayne
Good evening Sarah,

Not quite sure what you mean by “interface” but when I tried to include a screenshot of my AVG opening screen I was informed that it exceeded 32,000 characters. My opening screen has a tick and "You have basic protection"; showing computer, web and email as protected. In Windows Security/Virus & threat protection/Security providers my computer shows AVG as "turned on" and Windows Defender as "turned off" but following the same path in my wife's computer does not now show AVG at all. Her opening AVG screen is the same as mine. If screenshots would be useful please let me know how I can send these without exceeding the word limit.

Kind Regards,

Wayne

Thank you for your explanation, Wayne.

I suggest you to repair AVG Antivirus FREE and check if you're able to enable it.

Refer the article for repair AVG Antivirus (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Repair-AVG-Antivirus

Keep us posted.

Thank you for trying, Wayne.

You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on "Answer" & then click on the "Image" [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.

Are you referring that AVG is not enabled in Windows settings?

If yes, let us know.

Good evening Sarah,

AVG successfully repaired. The computer is still not accepting the command to turn AVG on. Windows Defender is shown as switched on but there seems no option to turn it off merely one to open the app.

Any further suggestions?

Kind Regards,

Wayne

We understand your concern, Wayne.

Regarding the clear, you have to restart the computer after running the tool which will remove the icons on your desktop.

However, we glad to know that the issue has been fixed.

We request you to monitor the status and contact us if you face the same issue again.
