AVG free antivirus will not open and scan

After  numerous hours of dealing with this issue I finally removed AVG free antivirus from my computer and installed another product.  I believe the source of these problems is related to AVG's attempt to try to sell people the AVG security which many people don't want. After reading the blogs I noticed that many people have had the same problem and additionally many people have left AVG.

Perhaps in the future AVG may want to consider reverting back to their old format where the AVG free antivirus and paid subscriptions are completely separate. Once you have downloaded the AVG free antivirus and have let it expire your computer is put in a sort of cyber hell.

When I try to scan I get the following message:

"Sorry, we experienced a slight hiccup in communicating with our server."  This has been going on all day.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  Your assistance is appreciated.

The program keeps asking me to "install Internet security with a free 30 day trial".  I have clicked on that and it appears to load but then it goes back to the same page that says "Internet security - install for malware protection".  When I press "try it free" it keeps closing and I still can't get to the scale. Please help.
