This isn't the expected behavior. Please repair AVG Antivirus free http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG from the control panel, restart the PC and then check the status.
If the issue persists, please provide the screenshot [http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-create-a-screenshot] of the CPU usage of AVG services to check and assist further.

A few days ago AVG FREE on XP started using 130 or 140 megabytes on every boot up even consecutive ones so it is not virus defs or other update. To many for me.
