AVG Free Broken Protection

Have the same Issue with AvgFree on Windows XP PC. Until a few days everything working ok. But till last Friday suddenly AVG tray have an (!) icon. From then i face this problem all day long. When this happens i don't have internet connection on my pc for browsing or skype or any other services working but i can ping from CMD internet addreses inside or outside my local network. As far as i can see from windows services the AVG ANTIVIRUS service stopes. This happens many times a day. To prevent restart my PC i just go to services and start the service again. I have already try to restart my PC(many times), Uninstall and reinstall AVG Antivirus but the problem still remains. Please Fix this…is a bug for sure!!!

Hi Keith,
I understand that you are facing issues with AVG Free Antivirus. In-order to fix the issue Please follow the below process.
Start->Control panel->click on programs(Uninstall a program)-: The select AVG Product and repair it.
If you have any further issues, Please feel free to contact us.
Thank you.

Hello Keith,
We are happy to know that the issue was resolved. The first time repair much have stopped because the AVG service were unable to restart. After the computer restarted, the AVG services must have got restarted without any issue and that should have solved this. We appreciate your time and co-operation in bringing this to our concern. Feel free to contact us for further query regarding AVG.
Thank you

Update:

To cut a long story short, I tried to uninstall AVG as suggested but it offered “Repair” so I tried that.  It ran very slow and then locked Outlook Express and computer when I tried to restart.  Did a hard restart.

After restart, AVG was still broken.  Tried “Repair” again.  This time it ran better to completion.  Did a restart and AVG seems back working ok.

Few hours later, I got the same problem suddenly on another computer (Win 7 Desktop).  Tried to get to “Repair” but then a popup screen said: “Restart required.  Please restart your computer to continue (Error code:0xe001f90b)”

After the restart there was a screen saying “AVG has been updated!”.  AVG seems to be working ok again.

Why did I get a similar problem on two separate computers?  Seems like there is a problem with these latest AVG Updates.  Hope it’s a one-off problem.

Sorry, but it doesn't look at all like the issue was resolved … unless one counts random results after multiple restarts a successful resolution.  That similar problems arose on both of Keith's Windows XP and Windows 7 devices suggests that the AVG "update" recently rolled out suffers from a defect affecting multiple platforms.

I too had the same situation on a Windows XP system as described above, arising after an AVG product update installed itself yesterday.  The error messages continued despite several reboots, however, and nothing I saw here restored my confidence in this software … so unlike Keith I uninstalled AVG and am looking for a more reliable antivirus product.  Good luck to him, and to you.

I have a paid version of AVG Internet Security and have had the same issues. Repairing didn't work. I had to uninstall the AVG protection, reboot, reinstall. So far it seems to be working again.

It makes me wonder for just how long my protection was broken/not active for before I discovered it.

Thanks Sarath

When I look in Control Panel > “Add or remove programs or Windows components” I see four AVG items as follows.

AVG                                        31/03/2017      Version 1.162.2.62416
AVG Protection                     29/03/2017      Version 2016.151.8007
AVG Protection                     31/03/2017      Version 17.3.3011
AVG Security Toolbar            23/11/2012      Version 19.6.0.592

When I select one of these I see two buttons, “Change” and “Remove”.  I don’t see a “Repair”.  There is also a “Click here for support information”, which gives the version numbers in the third column above.

I don’t use AVG Security Toolbar, so that could happily be removed, but the other three are confusing.

Windows XP Laptop:

The AVG system tray icon shows “!” – “Error – Click for more info”
I click this.  AVG interface shows pink “Antivirus Free, Not Protected”
I goto “1 message” > “See all messages”.
It says, “! Your Computer protection is broken”
I click “FIX NOW” – no difference.

In AVG interface, I click on “Antivirus Free, Open”.
Shows pink “Protection is disabled.  Protection will automatically enable after PC restart.”
I click “FIX NOW” – Pink changes to green then back to pink
Reboot – no difference.

Keith, I have checked the details you have provided.
In this case Please Uninstall the AVG and AVG Protection part from the control panel.
Then try to re-install it.
Thank you.
