Hello Bill,
We regret the inconvenience caused. We would request you to remove previously installed AVG program traces from your system using AVG Remover tool and then try to reinstall AVG Free Anti virus.
Note: If you have installed any other conflicting programs like AVAST, NORTON, MCAFEE or KASPERSKY try to uninstall it.
Once you have uninstalled them from your system, try to follow the steps mentioned below.
1) To download AVG remover tool, please click on this link: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-reinstall-AVG
2) Run the downloaded file and follow the on screen instructions.

A message appears referring to 3 messages: Ant-spam is not active, Online Shield is not active and Firewall is not active.  Clicking on the "Fix Now" button shows activity "In Progress" but, after that , the original message/s remain together with the button "Fix Now".  Why is this? 

The main screen for AVG AntivusFree shows a Protected icon with a red 3 (for messages?) superimposed.  Why is this?

Bottom line: am I protected and to what extent?

  1. Restart your PC when the restart option is displayed on the AVG remover tool screen.
    4) Once you have logged into your PC after the restart, please go to C:\ drive and delete the "AVG REMOVER" folder manually.
    Note: Please use the AVG Remover tool mentioned on the article to uninstall the AVG program more effectively.
