Okay… First, RT opens fine from both with I.E. & Firefox Portable (a program suggested by FF support that runs from a separate folder and does not interfere with the main FF browser). I can also use the 'RT News' add-on with the FF portable (not available on I.E.).
I did disable the individual components of my AVG Free and was not able to access RT.com regardless.
Let me also re-emphasize that I'm using FF v46.0.1 (old and unsupported but allows me to use a 'Tab Groups' add-on which I used for many years before it was D/C'ed and have a gazzilion .json files of saved URLs that open with it.
We appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue, Rael.
Would you be so kind to disable AVG temporarily to check if it's causing the issue?
As the issue persists, even after trying to identify the component that causes the issue, seems to be an issue with the outdated version of Firefox.
To temporarily disable AVG : Right click on AVG icon in system tray (botton right corner, near date & time) - click on toggle beside Protection & choose the desired time frame.
Hello Rael,
We realize the situation and it is obvious that AVG Antivirus free is the reason behind this as it showed you a threat detection regarding RT News add-on.
Will you be able to provide the screenshot of the popup that you received from AVG regarding this add-on?
You can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
If not, try to reinstall RT news add-on to Firefox browser and see whether AVG Antivirus free blocks it and shows you the message.
If yes, you can then take a screenshot of it and send here.
Yesterday, upon booting up, I had an AVG notification regarding the 'RT News' add-on saying it had been blocked or removed.
Is my AVG Free anti-virus causing this problem?
Thanks
We appreciate your efforts.
The issue persists even after disabling AVG and it seems to be an issue with outdated Firefox browser.
We recommend you to check if RT News add on is working on the latest Firefox browser.
If needed, you can uninstall AVG Secure Browser as suggested here: https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Uninstall-AVG-Secure-Browser
As an aside, how can I stop the AVG Secure Browswer from opening when I boot up? This appears to be a new addition since the last update.
I had to go to the General Support page and scroll down to find this thread... is that how it's supposed to work?
I did remove the 'RT News' add-on & also deleted my RT bookmark. Note that the add-on is supplied by RT as a pop-up on their news pages, not Firefox.
I created a new RT bookmark but as noted in my initial query, it only opens one, maybe 2, pages before it starts only opening a blank page or recycles to the page I was already on. Since it's not possible to get pages open to have the 'RT News' pop-up show up, I cannot get the screenshot of the AVG pop-up.
Would AVG be blocking RT.com?
From your previous post, we see that you've tried disabling each component to identify the component that causes the issue, Rael.
Hence, we've suggested to check if disable entire AVG temporarily fixes the issue.
Would you be so kind to let us know if you've already tried disabling the entire AVG protection?

BTDT, didn't help.
While I understand the issue of the 'legacy' Firefox version, it's been working fine for years up until Monday when I went kaput.
As I mentioned earlier:
"RT opens fine from both with I.E. & Firefox Portable (a program suggested by FF support that runs from a separate folder and does not interfere with the main FF browser). I can also use the 'RT News' add-on with the FF portable (not available on I.E.)."
Thanks for the secure browser removal tip; hadn't realized it was installed as a separate program rather than integral to the latest update.
Will query the Mozilla community on my RT issue.
Appreciate everyone's input & time.
