AVG Free latest update causes "you are unprotected" message on desktop icon

AVG Free has just yesterday in UK been updated but now if I float my cursor on the desktop icon it says in pink "you are unprotected" although there is not the usual warning sign. When I open AVG it says in pink "you have basic protection" and accompanies this with an exclamation mark. But the two features that come with AVG Free seem to be on and my Windows seems to agree. Looking on Google almost the same issue came up in 2018 - and advice on uninstall/reinstall was not effective -in fact it seems another update was needed. But it worries me doubly because someone said this was a marketing ploy to drive customers to other products which is a bit odd. Any ideas folks please?
