I followed the suggestions in Ranjani's answer and installed the "recommended" version from AVG AntiVirus FREE | AVG-installasjonsfiler. I did find an old list of my exceptions and settings; some locations and menu items have changed but I was able to enter most of them. So far, everything seems to be working properly.
Thanks, all –

Ephraim,
You need to uninstall this trial expired version to have your AVG Antivirus Free. Refer this article:
http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product to run AVG Clear and Remover tool to uninstall AVG with its traces. Note: Run AVG Clear tool first.
Use this link: https://www.avg.com/en-us/download.prd-gsr-free to download offline installation file for AVG Antivirus Free and check its status.

I've been using AVG Free on my Windows PC computers for years; I'm currently running under Windows 7. When I tried to open AVG today to check when the antivirus database was last updated, I found a notice saying "Your Internet Security trial has expired" with "Buy now" and "Already have a license" links but no way to say "no thanks" and get to the AVG menu. Clicking "Already have a license" gets links to upgrade or to activate AVG Internet Security by purchasing it or entering the license # for the paid version of Internet Security).
The Windows Task Manager says that AVG is running. Right-clicking the AVG icon on the task bar gives the usual "Open," "Scan computer," and "temporarily disable" buttons. So the issue isn't that AVG isn't working, just that I can't get to the menu to do things like check updates, run a full scan instead of a basic scan, adjust options, or edit exemptions.
Is it the case that I can no longer use AVG Free without purchasing the Internet Security component? If so, I'll reluctantly consider switching products. If I must do that, where can I find my list of exemptions if I don't have access to the Options menu?
Hello Ephraim,
I'm sorry we do not have option to keep a back up of the AVG Internet Security trial exceptions list, if you will use AVG remover/AVG clear tool then it will remove all the AVG traces from your computer (including their exceptions list).
However, after the AVG Free Antivirus installation, you can add the exceptions (if needed).
Best regards,
Alok.

Thank you. And… I assume the Clear and Remover tool will erase my exceptions. Is there a way to see what they are before I remove the trial-expired version, so I can copy them to add back in after reinstalling? For instance, are they in a file that I'll be able to read? If so, where is it likely to be?
