I have also been facing similar issue. There is definitely some problem with AVG updates through proxy since July as mentioned by Antonio. I am surprised that the problem is not resolved yet. I uninstalled/reinstalled/completely removed AVG for a few days etc. But automatic updates always fail.

Ketan
as I have explained, the situation is this: the proxy is configured correctly, i use this configuration for years without any problems and I have not changed anything. Suddenly the problem for all users at once, that does look strange: if I delete temporary files Avg updates through the proxy but the next update (also stimulated manually) it fails. I can not recommend to my colleagues to delete temporary files, is a manual procedure unacceptable: mean abandoning AVG forever.
I hope in the new version of the program that solves automatically via upgrading the problem, because I think that no option configuration can solve the problem.
As proof of what I say, today I turned on a PC with AVG with the built 5961 (actually is 6086) and configured with our proxy as others: the automatic and manual AVG definitions upgrade is perfect.
I seem to slip on a banana peel

Hi Antonio. I'm sorry about the inconvenience caused to you. Please have a look at http://avgread.me/1MsVvqo and check if your AVG Antivirus Free has been configured properly. Please try the two modes of proxy connection too. Please let us know the result. Thanks.
Hello,
from mid-July Avg free not properly updated through our proxy server.
If i delete temporary files as you suggest this is done, but the next time it fails again.
Apart from the fact that the update should be fully automatic, I noticed that the built 5961 is exempt from the problem, while the later have this problem and this makes me think that it was one of your software update that causes the problem.
I do not I changed anything in my network structure, nor the proxy server. If i step over the Proxy server Avg always updates correctly.
It seems that from a certain point onwards ( mid-July) AVG free fails to properly handle and an automatic proxy servers without authentication
Do you have evidence of the problem?
Thanks

Hi Antonio, sorry to know that. Could you please try to reinstall AVG once ( http://avgread.me/1bsCjtC ) and check if the issue persists? Thanks. Komal, AVG Customer Care.
