As you suggested uninstalled AVG Free and then reinstalled it. Still have red warning on icon and when I open AVG Free. Here is screen shot per your instruction
This notorious problem cause and solution, as I understand now are:
[Cause] Possbile the AVG Zen. In my case, the AVG Zen icon in unintall menu of Windows is broken. There are always two places having AVG installed: Program Files and ProgramData when this problem occurs on some single computer.
[Symptom] White cross in red circle in system tray of AVG icon.Clicking the button on AVG dialog can't help, either. Repair or uninstall/reinstall also doesn't help.
[Solution] Download AVG_Remover.exe and AVG_Clear.exe (Googling 'AVG Download tools and utilities' for former; Googling 'complete removal of all AVG products' for latter, you normal can find download url). Run remover first, then run clear second, the latter will reboot with safe mode and just following instructions (it will tell you two places with AVG installed as I described above). After things done, reboot computer and download AVG free front-gate installer (normally 3.x mb) and waiting for downloading full version and then installing. Now that White Cross in Red Circle will be gone forever.
Good luck to everyone who experience this problem as I did.
I sincerely apologize for the difficulties caused to you. Please remove your AVG Free Antivirus completely as per the steps mentioned here . Then reinstall it by following the steps mentioned in this article .

Hello Bud,
If AVG Remover tool is not finding any installed AVG program then please click "Run Anyway". I request you to follow the instruction ( http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product ) to run AVG Remover tool and AVG Clear tool (Please run the both remover tools one by one), it will help you to remove all the AVG traces from your computer.
After the computer reboots, you can follow the instruction to download/install AVG Free Antivirus.
Best regards,
Alok.
Open AVG Internet Security, click on "My AVG->My Subscription", from here check if AVG program shows correct expiry date. If not either sign in to your AVG account or enter your license number you have to activate the product.
If you are using free version of AVG, then please uninstall AVG from your computer control panel and click on this link http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free to reinstall latest version.

Thankyou for your quick response, I have re-installed, even downloaded AVG uninstaller. Funny it did not even find the new one I just reinstalled. I was hoping more instruction was emailed to the original poster. Ver 18.2.3046 def 180306-04
Could having AVG Zen on my computer be causing the problem?
