AVG Free - Scan clash; Frozen; Repair/Uninstall fails

I have successfully used AVG Free for many years but, a couple of weeks ago when I had initiated a scan, the scheduled scan then started a few minutes later but neither of them completed. I tried to close both scans, but neither would respond. I had to shut down my computer in order to stop them! Presumably they had clashed in some way.  I then tried to Repair the program but this Failed. Then tried to Uninstall but this also failed.  Error Code 0xC0070782.  I want to remove all AVG programs and then reinstall.  How can I do this?
I don't want to perform a System Recovery as I am not sufficiently confident or computer savvy to go down that route.  Help, please!
