For the past week whenever AVG pops up or I have tried to open the full app nothing is there but a black box. In the hidden icons tray the icon displays 'not protected.' I am running Win 8.1 on a HP Beats laptop.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled through control panel. I tried to search for the uninstaller tool mentioned in other answers but have not seen a link directly for that - only other questions and answers unrelated.
