Hi Kishore. This is Mark Agulnick, the poster of the original issue. Thank you for the help but after following your instructions, I am still having an issue.
I do not have any conflicting applications (nore to follow).
I used the AVG Remover tool as requested. I actually ran it twice. The second time it said "nothing found".
I then downloaded the latest version of AVG Free (file name: AVG_Protection_Free_1606.exe) and executed it. It seemed to be downloading & installing fine but then towards the end I got the following error:
Installation failed.
Description: General error (0x0643)
Error code 0xC0070643
It actually has happened 3 times. I've taken the screen shot as described and it is below.
Windows Defender does seem to turn on automatically but I made sure it was off for the last few runs. You can see that in the screen shot.
I also saved the log from the install, AvgInstallLog.cab. Let me know if you need that.

Mark, Win 8.1… Windows Defender… Just in case you don't know Defender was re-classified as an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG so when AVG is installed Defender should always be disabled.

If not, please follow the instructions on the article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-reinstall-AVG to reinstall all the traces of the AVG program and check whether it resolves the issue.
Note : Please use the AVG Remover tool mentioned on the article to uninstall the AVG program more effectively.

Hi Balasubramanian. I followed the instructions in the E-mail to basically download and run the sysinfo tool, which I did on Sunday (12/4) and then had it send you the output. I followed up with an E-mail as requested on 12/4 and again on 12/6. So far I have heard nothing back.
When would you expect that I would get a reply?

Update: SInce I still had received no response since running sysinfo on 12/4, I decided to try executing AVG_Protection_Free_1606.exe again. This time it was successful so I am all set.

I have an HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1. I have been running AVG Free for quite a while with no issues. A short while ago, it attempted to update in background and it got "Update Manager General Error". I kicked off the update manually and got the same error.
I then went to the main AVG website, did a search and it suggested I download and reinstall the software. I downloaded the file but when I execute it, I get "Unexpected error: problem during installation. Error code: 0x001f94e).
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Same issue. Update is not working.
