That time it worked although FYI  when I clicked on the link you sent me with the clear program it returned an unsafe connection so I used a previously downloaded copy of the program. Installation went well but I had to unistall the automatically installed AVG Browser because it's given me problems in the past when it would not open safe websites.Thanks for your help.

I haven' t been able to update the definitions for AVG for weeks. I can't repair itand every time I try to update it fails. I get message when I try to repair that a program is trying to change the program and then big red x that reads there was an error while changing the product configuration.: The update reads the release date for the current day. Nothing seems to work. I've tried most everything listed on the web except uninstalling and reinstalling.
Any suggestions?

So I followed those instructions, restarted and downloaded the AVG free version again. It's been installing for oner 30 minutes with the green progress almost at the end of the bar. Should it take this long or do you hahve further recommendations?

Let us uninstall the program using AVG Clear tool and install it again.

Use the following link for downloading the AVG Clear tool https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe

Run the file and when you get AVG clear window loading, you will get a prompt with Yes and No option. Click on "No" and then select "Uninstall" to proceed with the removal.

Restart the PC when the prompt appears and then install AVG Antivirus free as mentioned in this article https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free
