I understand the inconvenience.
However, the current version of AVG Antivirus is 18.4.
Hence, try to perform an update and check whether you get the latest version and protection activated.
For update, open AVG Antivirus free interface.
Click on "Menu–>Settings–>Update".
Click on "Update" for both "Program Definitions" and "Virus Definitions".
Keep us informed about the status.

I am running Windows 10 and AVG (free version) services will not start. When I started from the start menu I get the normal window, with the warning "You are not protected!" Clicking the Fix it button does not do anything. Software version is 18.2.3046 and the virus definition version is 180515-0, updated yesterday.
Has anybody else experienced this?

The issues might be because of old/previous AVG traces.
In this case, I request you to remove AVG completely along with any previous traces using the AVG clear tool/AVG Remover tool and then do a fresh installation of AVG. This will ensure that none of the previous traces of AVG are left on your computer and you have an updated version.
Please follow the instruction (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-troubleshoot-issues-after-upgrade-to-the-latest-AVG-antivirus-product) to run AVG Remover tool and AVG Clear tool.
After the computer reboots, you can follow the instruction to download/install AVG Free Antivirus.
